The Big Spell

We are now ready to start our 'Big Spell' in Y Graig. 'Big Spelling' is our school spelling scheme which starts for most pupils in Year 1 in the summer term.

Every child will work at their own stage (very similar to Big Maths CLIC) on a weekly basis. The children have been assessed to find a baseline and will bring home a sheet with 12 sets of words. They will work through one set a week, starting with the first set. Your child's list will be stapled into their reading diary and sent home tomorrow. Please remove the sheet from their book and keep it in a safe place at home, as this will be the only copy sent home for 12 weeks. All children will have an opportunity to work on their words with a partner in school throughout the week using ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check’. However, it is vital that your child also spends some time learning these at home.  On their spell check day, your child will work with a partner to assess each other on their spellings. This will be supported and marked by a member of staff . If your child is able to move on to the next set of words, they will have a sticker stuck in their reading diary. If your child does not have a sticker, then this is a sign that they need to revisit the same set of words for another week.

If you have any questions, please come and see me.
