Penygawsi Reading Challenge

We have begun a whole school reading challenge in Penygawsi. Each year group have been given a reading list of books we would like your child to have read by the end of the year. Here are the reading lists for Reception and Year 1. Some of these books you may already have at home and, if not, they are all available in the local libraries too. Once you have read one of these books, please can you write a comment in the yellow reading diary and we will keep a checklist in school of which books your child has read. The children who have read all of the books by the end of the year will receive a certificate and be entered into a prize draw.

Reception Reading List

Year 1 Reading List

To kick-start the challenge, over half term we would like you to choose one of the stories to explore together at home.  Below are some suggestions on how to really get to know the books in detail and questions to help you discuss the stories once you have finished each book.
  • Look at the front cover, discuss what they think the book may be about.
  • look at the back cover and talk about the blurb.  Was their prediction correct?
  • Talk about the pictures - What can you see? Who are the characters?
  • What is happening? Why?
  • How do you think they are feeling?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • Was it a happy ending?
  • What was your favourite part? Why?
  • Can you re-tell the story?

Please can you comment in your child's diary which book you chose and ask your child to write what they thought about the book in a simple sentence or word.  Maybe they could rate the story out of 5 stars.
