Summer Wythnos 3 - 4/05/20

Hello everyone, I hope you are all well and had a lovely weekend despite the colder, wetter weather. I have done a little sun dance in the hope that Mr Sun returns soon.  The sunshine really does help make everything feel better doesn't it?!

Another great week of learning ahead Y Graig. Don't forget, Mrs Farrell and I are only a chat away on Discussions or an email if you need any help with something that we have set.  Remember, all we ask is that you try your best and do as much of the work as possible independently.  You do not need to spell every word correctly, just use your phonics to help you sound out the words you want to use.  The HFW mats glued into your Home Learning books are like a dictionary, use them to help with your spellings too.  It is okay to make a mistake, because that is how we learn. So don't be afraid to get something wrong.

Thank you to everyone who added to my discussion about this term's topic and gave us their ideas.  Mrs Farrell and I have had a good chat and have broken down your ideas into weekly activities.  We hope that we can make use of everyone's suggestions and that we have out together activities to incorporate your wonderful thoughts.  Before half term, we have decided to focus on healthy eating and after half term we will look closer at healthy minds. Although, you will be set a mindfulness task every week.

HEALTHY EATING

The Eatwell Plate

The Eatwell Guide is designed to make healthy eating easier. Eat foods from each group on The Eatwell Guide in the correct amounts each day. This way, you'll get the balance of energy and nutrients you need for good health. Foods that are like each other sit together in the same group and can be swapped.  Take look at the video below which gives you an introduction to healthy eating.

Look at the poster below and/or the PowerPoint in Summer Wythnos 3 folder on Hwb class and discuss the following:
  • Which are the two biggest groups on the plate?
  • Which foods can you see in these groups?
  • Which is the smallest group?
  • Which foods can you see in this group?
  • Which are the middle sized groups?
  • What foods can you see in these groups?
  • Where is the: egg; tomato; bread; fish; cake; milk?

In the same folder you will find a PDF labelled Eatwell Sorting Activity.  You will need to sort the different foods on the PDF into the correct sections on a blank Eatwell plate.  If you would like to make your own using a paper plate and drawing the items rather than cutting and gluing, that would be great.  You can present the work in whichever way you feel.

Recipes

Erin R suggested that we look at recipes to help us write our own.   Recipes are a form of instructional writing.  This week are going to delve into the wonderful world of recipe writing before you have a go at writing your own next week.

Click on the link below which will take you to a BBC video of TV presenter Stefan Gates explaining how to make a rice crispy cake.  There are also 2 YouTube videos about recipes for you to look at too.  While you watch the videos, make a list of the features of a successful recipe.  Write these features neatly into your Home Learning book. You can record them using bullet points or create a mind map.

To show that you have a thorough understanding of recipes and how we write them, we would like you to complete the Greek Salad Reading Comprehension in the folder on Hwb class.  There are 3 different versions of the activity, you choose which one you would like to complete.

* Easiest
** Hardest
*** Trickiest

Repeated Patterns

Sophia M suggested that we make fruit skewers so we have decided to incorporate this idea with some maths.  We would like you to get creative and make some fabulous fruit patterns for a tasty snack this week.  Take photos of your finished product.

* 2+ items
** 3+ items
*** 4+ items

Take a look at these videos to remind you of what a repeated pattern is.

You will also find some Repeated Patterns math worksheets which I would like you to choose one of and complete. As with the reading, there are 3 levels of challenge and you decide which one you would like to do.

* Easiest
** Hardest
*** Trickiest

Food Tasting

Niall suggested that we try new foods (he tried a radish for the first time last week) which are healthy.  We would like you to choose 6 fruit and vegetables you have not tasted before and try them.  As you are eating them, think about how you would describe the taste and whether or not you will eat them again!

Once you have tried the six, can you order them by taste using a diamond 6 (template in files on Hwb class)? The top food will be your favourite and the bottom your least favourite.  Once you have finished your ranking, draw your favourite underneath, describe it and explain why this is the one you have ranked number 1.

Rock Painting

Tyler has already done some and Annabel has suggested that we paint beautiful pictures on rocks and hide them on our daily outdoor exercise during the week.  When someone finds one, it will make them smile and at a time like this making someone smile is a really important thing to do.  You can paint whatever you wish on your rocks, just make them bright and colourful.

We would like you to use a Sharpie pen and write a message on the back asking whoever finds it to post a picture on our Twitter page so that we can see how far these rocks travel and the smiles that they bring to others.  You need to include our Twitter address, which is @PenygawsiPri

We would also like you to add the hashtag #PenygawsiRocks2020

This week's book will be uploaded tomorrow, so please pop back to see who we will meet between the pages and what adventures they happen upon.

Advanced Notice
Next week we will be putting on our chef hats and getting creative in the kitchen.  This means you may need to add some extra items to your weekly shops. We wanted to give you enough notice as we appreciate most are only shopping once a week, and many online.  You will be making one healthy snack and one healthy meal.

Have a lovely week everyone. We can not wait to see your photos and work from the week and chat over on our class page on Hwb.
