Summer - Wythnos 10 (w/b 6th July)

It was so lovely to see lots of you come back to school last week! It was great to see so many smiling faces and hear all about your lockdown adventures. We are sure that lots of you have grown since we saw you last too! Thank you to you all for being so sensible when following all the new systems we have in school at the moment. We were so impressed by how quickly you all adapted. We hope you enjoyed yourself as much as we did and that you are looking forward to coming into school again next week.

For the families that decided not to return to school, we have enjoyed seeing all the lovely photos that you have uploaded. We will still be getting in touch with you over the phone over the three weeks. Please email if you need anything.

We must add an extra ‘diolch yn fawr’ for the AMAZING videos you have all made on toothbrushing last week. We LOVED watching them. We were very impressed by all the facts you were able to share and videos certainly made us smile.

Fitness Week!

To continue with our Calon Lan topic ‘Healthy Bodies and Healthy Minds’ we will be having a fitness week. We hope you will enjoy the activities we have planned for you.

Task 1 – Create a Game

Can you create a physical game to encourage exercise? Think of the games you may play in your garden, or games that you used to play on the playground in school that you enjoyed. Can you adapt them to make your own game? Or use your imagination to create a whole new game?! The game must encourage movement and exercise.

Once you have thought about the game, practise playing it a few times to make sure you understand how to play it and what the rules of the game are.

When you are happy that you could explain the game to someone else, write down the rules for others so they can learn to play it too.

We have completed lots of ‘explaining’ tasks over this term, so remember all the things you need to include when you are writing:

• A name for your game
• A list of the equipment you will need
• Use bullet points or numbers to put your steps in order
• Use words that show order e.g. Firstly, then, next
• Use your bossy verbs
• Clear instructions so people understand.

Task 2 – Telling the Time

This week’s ‘Llyfr y Wythnos’ is ‘What’s The Time Mr Wolf?’. Please listen to the story on the separate blog post.

This week we are going to revise telling the time to the hour and half hour. Watch this video to help you.

In the Hwb class file (Named SUMMER WYTHNOS 10) you will find some activities to help you practise time.

Look for the stars at the bottom of the sheets to choose which ones you want to try.
*same skill, less writing
**recording the times on the clock and drawing on the hands
*** recording the time 1 hour/2 hours before or after the time shown

In the Hwb file, there is also a board game to practise telling the time, that you can print out and play.

Task 3 – Heart Rate Activities

When exercising, it is important that we get our heart rate up. Watch this video ‘How to feel your heart beat’ to find out why.

We are going to try some different exercises to find out which one increases your heart rate the most. Ask someone at home to help you work out your resting heart rate by watching this video below.

1) Record your resting heart rate.
2) Choose 3 different exercises, e.g. Star jumps, running on the spot, jumping.
3) Do one exercise for 40 seconds and then measure your heart rate.
4) Rest to lower your heart rate, then try another exercise.
5) Repeat until you have recorded your heart rate for three different activities.

What did you find out? Which exercise made your heart pump the fastest? Why do you think that? You could write down or type your answers. You could make a graph to show your results, or you could make a little video explains what you found out.

(Heart)Beat The Clock Activity

This is a fun activity to demonstrate what an amazing muscle our heart is!

Materials needed:
• 2 large buckets or bowls
• 10 pints of water
• a 1/4 cup measuring cup, or small cup
• watch or timer

Background information:
In just one day, the heart pumps 1,900 gallons (about 15,200 pints!) of blood through our body!  That’s pretty amazing!  To break this down on a smaller scale, the heart pumps 1.3 gallons (just over 10 pints) per minute.  Showing children a six pint and four pint milk bottle full of water can help them get a picture of this amount.  A little over a gallon a minute means that in each heartbeat, the heart is pumping 2.4 ounces of blood, or about 1/4 cup.

(Heart)Beat the Clock activity:
1. Fill one bucket, or bowl with 10 pints of water.
2. Place an empty bucket or bowl next to it.
3. Find a 1/4 measuring cup (or a small cup)
4. Set a timer for 1 minute.  Challenge your child to try to work as fast as their heart.  They need to try to move all the water in the bowl or bucket into the empty one in just one minute or less using cup as a scoop.

Conclusion:
You will find that it’s very hard, if not impossible, to scoop and move that much water in just one minute.  It takes our heart about 72 beats to move this amount of blood through our body in that time frame.  Through this fun activity, students can see first hand that the heart is an amazingly strong and efficient muscle!

Task 4 – Wellbeing
As this week has all been about getting active, for your well being task, why don’t you get out into your garden and try some of these ball skills? Remember you ‘growth mindset’ some things are not easy to begin with, but practising can help you improve. Maybe you could see how much you improve on each skill over the week?

We understand that we are nearing the end of the school year, that lots of you are returning to school and lots of parents are returning to work, but please try to do what you can from the activities above and remember to upload your work so we can see just how hard you are working at home. We love seeing what you have uploaded and they really do make us smile!

As we are in school every day apart from a Wednesday, we won’t be accessing your files as often, but we will still be looking at them and commenting on your work.

Enjoy another week of distance learning!
