Homework

On Friday new home learning books were given out. From next week, home learning activities will be sent out on a Wednesday to be returned on the following Monday. We understand that as you didn't get the books until Friday (we were waiting for delivery of new books), then this week either bring your Three Little Pigs sequencing homework on Monday or Tuesday.

Reading Books.
Reading bags with diaries need to be in school every day. As we are a job share the children will be reading on different days each week to ensure both teachers listen to your child.
Reading diaries need to be signed by a Thursday. Reading bags, books and diaries will be kept in school each Thursday to change books which will then be given out each Friday.

Please remember, when reading with your child,it is not just the fact that they can read each word. In school we also work on the way they read. We look other skills such as developing fluency, awareness of the punctuation (stopping at full stops, making a character voice when they see speech marks etc), and understanding of the story through questioning.

For children who are at the beginning of their reading journey, they need to listen carefully to the sounds as they say them to blend them into a word. They may need you to say the sounds slowly too. Oxford Reading Scheme contain many 'Look and Say' words. These are words that you cannot build. These are words that need to memorised. If your child has one of these tricky words in their books, it can be useful to write the word on a slip of paper and use as a flash card, looking at the word and saying them, for a few minutes every day. Also, the pictures are really important too, if there is a large word that is difficult, but there is a clue in the picture (for example 'astronaut' appears in one book!)  then encourage the children to look at the picture to help.

Reading 'real' story books to your child demonstrates to them fluency, how you react to punctuation and expression.

Reading 'real' books is also really beneficial developing readers, and they can be a nice change to Oxford Reading Tree books! Let the children read the words they can and you read the others. Please try to read 'real' books with your children rather than buying Oxford Reading Tree books as this can be confusing to children when we use them as our main scheme in school. If you do wish to use books with similar words to the level your child is on, you can buy Oxford Reading Tree 'Read at Home', which follow school levels but have different stories.

Saesneg/ English
This week, we will be continuing our work on posters, but moving onto 'For Sale' posters. We will be linking  the posters with what we found out during our trip to St Fagans and looking at the facilities the different houses had to offer.
Talk with your child about what an Estate Agent may write about your house.

Mathemateg/Maths
This week we are developing the skill of addition, making sure we start with the biggest number and counting on. If you practise this at home, start with numbers to 10 and progress to numbers within 20 if possible. Encourage your child to count from the next number. Eg 7+2= put 2 fingers up, put 7 in your head and start counting on two '8,9', '7+2=9'. If they don't count on they could end up counting 7,8. We sometimes encourage to put the number in their head by tapping their head on 7, then count the two fingers - 8,9.
The same principle is used for number lines, ensuring they put their finger on the largest number, them jump along the line, touching each number as they count. Eg put their finger on 7, count 1 (and land on 8), count 2 and land on 9

Gwyddoniaeth/Science
The Three Little Pigs are arguing about which of their cars will be the fastest to escape from The Big Bad Wolf! Can you work with your friends to test the cars and let them know the answer?

Cymraeg/Welsh
We will be continuing with colours this week, finding out which colours we like and dislike.
'Pa liw wyt ti'n hoffi?' - What colour do you like?
'Dw i'n hoffi coch.' - I like red.
'Dw i ddim yn hoffi glas.' - I don't like blue.

See you all tomorrow.
