This week marks the 30th anniversary of The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). This was the starting point for establishing universal rights for all children and young people around the World.

The Super Ambassadors and their Rights Rangers have decided that Penygawsi Primary should celebrate the upcoming birthday by carrying out a range of activities which highlight certain articles that they believe the children of Penygawsi should be aware of.

The articles they have chosen are:

On Friday, the pupils in KS2 will work in their houses (Dewi, Dyfodwg, Illtyd and Gwynno) and rotate around each class to complete the activities each teacher has planned linked to a different article. By the end of the morning, the children will have a greater understanding of 5 articles. The children in Foundation Phase will stay in their classes and work with their teacher to look at one specific article. When your children come home Friday, ask them what they have learnt and which article they enjoyed learning about most.

The birthday will also mark the relaunch of our Rights Mascot, Dec the Ant.  Each teacher will give the Rights Rangers a name of a pupil who worked hard during their activity to learn the rights and also showed an understanding of how they can help others understand these rights. Dec will be given to one lucky pupil on Monday 2nd December and will get to spend the week at home with them.  Dec will arrive in his special bag, along with his diary and The Small Book Of Rights.

The Super Ambassadors and their Rights Rangers ask that you choose one or two rights to focus on at home during the week and give Dec the opportunity to take part in activities/experiences linked to this/these rights.  Could the lucky pupil can take photographs of their time with Dec and if possible Tweet, hastagging the article they have focused on?  We also ask that they make a small diary entry of their week with Dec too. From next week on, Dec will spend time at home with a different pupil every week.  The pupil will be nominated by class teachers because of their knowledge and understanding of the rights.

Would you like to meet Dec and the Rights Rangers?  Well, of course you do!  Here they are.....

We are sure that the children will enjoy this celebration of their rights while marking 30 Years of the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history that has helped transform children’s lives around the world.

Look out for photos of the day on Friday

Many Thanks
Mrs Rees, Super Ambassadors and The Rights Rangers
