School Closure - Week 1 - 23/03/20

We understand that you may be anxious about the news that our schools are closed and that you may be feeling pressure to ensure your child is homed schooled properly.  With all the concerns over the Coronavirus outbreak and the impact on our school and your child's learning, we have put together some activities to help you continue their education at home during the time the school is closed.

We appreciate that keeping children engaged in their learning whilst at home is not always easy and for this reason, we have carefully prepared activities for your child that can be completed both independently and/or with adult support.

However, this will be a worrying time for everyone, and our children will be able to feel it.  Remember to read with them, sing and dance with them.  Play games with them and build a fort out of sheets.  Snuggle up and watch a movie with them.  By doing these things they will remember this time as a fun time, rather than a scary one.

Please do try your best to follow the activities set out below but do not worry if they work or not.

Your child can complete the tasks set on either Office 365 or the J2E platform on their Hwb account and in the home learning exercise book their brought home on Thursday.

All we ask is that the children try their best and that they use these books in the same way as they would their school books.  This means that they need to remember their basics, which are writing on the line, finger spaces, capital letters and full stops.  We ask that they complete their tasks in pencil as this is what they use at school and are comfortable writing with.

WYTHNOS 1
W.B: 23rd March 2020

The first task we wish the children to complete is to decorate/cover their home learning books with something that represents them. Please remember to out your names on them.  Get creative everyone!  We look forward to seeing all your fabulous designs when we return to school.

Spelling
Take a look at the words below and to try to learn to spell them.  These are really important words that you should be using independently in your work and spelling most of them correctly without any help.

Do NOT try to learn them all at once.  Choose 6 at a time to focus on.  Once you think you have learnt them and can spell them without any help, cross them off your list and choose another 6 to learn. We have glued a copy into your exercise books for you to use.

There are lots of ways to help with learning spellings; take a look at these videos for some games an techniques.

Reading Comprehension

Click on the links below to take you to a range of reading comprehensions.  You must read the text first and then answer the questions linked to each text.  There are a range of different questions from find and copy, to multiple choice, and longer answers where you have to give reasons why.

Parts of The Church
Take a look at the virtual tour of a church below and take notes ready to complete the labelling activity attached to the link.  Can you find the different features of a church in the video and match them to the pictures given.  Maybe you could write a sentence or two about each feature as an extension after you have labelled them.

  Part 3

Measuring Length
Here are some challenges for you to complete linked to our latest maths focus, length.  You can record your work using a table, pictures and/or photographs.

1.  Can you find 5 objects (e.g. toy cars) and order them according to size?

2.  How long is a stick of spaghetti? Is it the same length after it has been cooked?

3.  Measure how tall you are and mark your height with masking tape on the floor. Place objects side by side next to your height. Can you find a combination of objects that measures the same length as your height?

4.  How many building bricks tall are you?

5.  Measure your height. Then, with someone’s help, measure the distance from fingertip to fingertip when you stretch your arms wide. Compare the distance – do you notice anything?

6.  Who has the longest finger in your house? Can you find out?

7.  How many steps does it take you to reach the door? How about to the doorway of another room?

8.  Measure some shoes. Make a table comparing shoe size to length of shoe. Can estimate how long bigger shoes would be?

9.  How far does the toy car travel if you roll it down a slope? Which one goes the furthest?

10. How many things can you find which measure exactly 15 cm? Put your results in a table.

Practical Activities
Below is a selection of hands on activities for you choose from.  Have a look at them and choose a few to carry out.  Whichever ones you choose to do, take photo or videos of the activity and upload to our School Twitter oage or your Hwb account so that we can see all the fun you are having.  You may like to out photos in your home learning book and write about the activity and why you enjoyed it.

Get Active Activities
Every day at school we usually take part in an activity which gets the children's hearts pumping and the adrenaline flowing.  The children really enjoy these, so each week we will share a different activity with you.  We ask that you aim to carry a Get Active Activity out daily for around 10-15 minutes.  This week we have chosen PE with Joe Wicks, The Body Coach.

Please click on the link below which will take you to The Body Coach's website where he will be streaming live sessions every morning at 9am.  What better way to start the day?!

Online Games
Take a look at the links below to a range of online platforms which have some great literacy and numeracy games for you to enjoy.

We are going to miss the children dearly during the closure time and wish most importantly that you all stay safe.

Kind Regards
Mrs Rees and Mrs Farrell :o)
