Look at what we've been up to this week!

This week we have been working on baseline assessments. We will continue to do this next week too.

Counting up to 10 and 20.

Threading beads to develop fine motor control.
Writing numbers up to 20.

Drawing 'the Great Fire of London'

Working with The Food Standards Agency and learning about the importance of good hygiene.

How to stack a fridge.

Remembering the four C's

We had a very special assembly from the Food Standards Agency.

Learning how to wash our hands properly with Gwen the puppet.

And lots, lots more!

Our P.E days are on a Tuesday and Thursday every week. We are still waiting for some children to bring in their P.E. Kits for us to keep until half term. Don't forget your wellies too.

At the moment I am assessing where the children are with regards to reading. Once I have completed a baseline assessment of phonics and high frequency words I will allocate either a reading book or sounds and high frequency words for your child to learn at home. Until then please read other story books to your child every night and discuss the story and illustrations. This is a vital stage in learning to read and a child needs to be exposed to stories on a daily basis.

Home learning will be given on Monday and the task is to colour in flames and write adjectives on the flames to describe them. Please make sure your child writes the adjectives and cuts out the flames. Even if you think the writing or sounds in the words are wrong or scruffy they still have to do it by themselves. This is called emergent writing and this is how we do writing in this class. Children led and independently! Children needs to be able to practise the characteristics of writing at any given opportunity in order to develop the skills. We don't like adults work on our walls. The flames will be used to make bunting to go in our class library area and are part of out Great Fire of London topic for this terms theme (under the umbrella of  Remember Remeber.) You will be given a template of flames to use.

The children have had a great first week with us. Some of them have had special awards and William won the smiley box prize this week. The children can earn smiley tabs for any kind of good work, kindness, good behaviour, politeness etc. They write their names on the smiley tab and place them in the smiley box. On Friday we pull out a name and the winners name gets a prize. I also give special awards for things the teachers have spotted that we like in class and we have a special chair, where one child is chosen to sit on it for a whole week to demonstrate how well they sit and listen whilst on the carpet. Adam sat on the special chair this week and Charlie has been chosen to sit on it for the whole of next week.  Smiles all around!

We have a small cloak room for coats and bags. Could you ensure that your child brings to school a small bag for their snacks and drinks. Some children have very large rucksacks that are too big for our pegs and boxes to hold.  The children only need  to bring a homework bag (which we keep in a box in class), a packed lunch bag if they are sandwiches and a small snack bag and drink to school. As you can appreciate we are a class of 30 and it's very cramped and cluttered with large rucksacks.

Over the weekend I will post the literacy and numeracy skills we will be working on this term. I haven't given out a paper copy of this information as we are an eco school and paper costs money. Please complete the email subscription on the right hand side of our blog page for notification of new blog posts to keep you up to date. You'll get an email within 24hours of a new post once you have verified your subscription request. It's easy to do.

Please come and see me if there is anything else you wish to know.

Many thanks,
Mrs James.
