Number Formation

I was asked this morning by several parents for some activities and worksheets linked to number formation after last weeks numeracy homework.  Many have voiced a concern that numbers re being written backwards or that the starting and exit points of each number are not known by some of the children.

Please see the Number Formation Rhyme posters below as a reference for these starting and exit points for the digits 0 to 9.

Ideas for activities:

1. These posters could be printed off and laminated so that your child can use a whiteboard pen to overwrite before trying to wrote them on paper independently.

2. You could also use sand and shaving foam to make it fun for the children.  Use lollipop sticks, feathers, fingers and pencils to write the number in the sand and foam, before writing on paper.

3. Use playdough to create the numbers.

4. Using chalk write numbers on the tarmac outside and the children use a wet paint brush to trace over the number and make it disappear.

I hope these ideas are useful and will help the children learn the correct formation for their numbers.
